Liverpool monument to celebrate John Lennon’s love of peace unveiled at Shanghai Expo

The design for a sculpture commemorating John Lennon’s commitment to peace was unveiled at Liverpool’s World Expo pavilion in Shanghai yesterday.

The full-size version, due to be completed in the coming months, will be permanently installed in Liverpool and is expected to become a major attraction for tourists.

Lennon’s son, Julian, is due to unveil the monument in October as part of a two-month long festival to celebrate what would have been his father’s 70th birthday, and observe the 30th anniversary of his death.

The monument, called Peace and Harmony, is by US artist Lauren Voiers, a 19-year-old from Ohio, who said her favourite Beatles song is I Am the Walrus.

Speaking from China last night, she told the Daily Post her inspiration came from “combining the power of art and music”.

She added: “I think this sums up a lot about John Lennon and what he stood for. On a personal note, my passion is art but I also love music and I wanted to reflect this in the monument. Both art and music are universal languages.”

Incorporated into the design are doves, musical notes, a guitar and a keyboard.

At Julian’s request, there is also a white feather. The 47-year-old said this was a reference to a specific conversation he had with his father.

“One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be OK, it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather,” he said.

Around 10 years ago he was given a white feather by some Aborigines in Australia, which led to him founding The White Feather Foundation to spread the message of peace.

Julian and his mother Cynthia – Lennon’s ex-wife – also used items from their private collection to create the exhibition White Feather: The Spirit of Lennon, at the Beatles Story on the Pier Head, which tells the story of their life with Lennon.

John Lennon peace sculpture unveiled in Shanghai

A sculpture to mark what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday has been shown at the Shanghai World Expo.

A maquette of the John Lennon Peace Monument - which when finished will stand at 18ft (5m) - was presented to the Liverpool Pavilion.

Created by 19-year-old Lauren Voiers, it is a globe, surrounded by birds and a single white feather to represent the Beatle's message of peace.

The £350,000 sculpture was commissioned by US group Global Peace Initiative.

The finished work will be given to the city's Beatles Story in October and has the support of Lennon's elder son Julian.

Ben Valenty, director of Global Peace Initiative which commissioned the sculpture, said he hoped the finished work, which is a gift to Liverpool, will become a place of pilgrimage in Lennon's home city for people who want to remember him.

It is one of many sculptures the group has commissioned as it aims to place one sculpture on each of the world's seven continents.

John Lennon Peace sculpture design unveiled at Shanghai World Expo

A six meter hand-painted scale model of a peace monument to be built for John Lennon, one of the founding members of ‘The Beatles’ Group, has been unveiled at the Liverpool pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.

Created by young American artist Laurean Voiers, the hand-painted scale model will be about one meter tall. The full-size version will be installed permanently in October 2010 in Lennon's hometown of Liverpool, and is expected to become a major attraction for tourists on the Beatles trail. It will stand 8 feet tall, 11 feet wide, and weigh 4.5 tons. Expected to cost $350, 000, the monument will be made from a mix of brushed aluminum, acrylic and a special weather-proof coating.

Named ‘Peace and Harmony’, the monument will feature a pair of hands mounted on a globe surrounded by a guitar and music notes. On top of the monument are a number of pigeons flying out from the hands with one of the birds holding a white feather. The white feather was incorporated at the request of Lennon's son Julian, who considered it as a symbol of his father's spirit and peace.

US-based Global Peace Initiative was behind the creation of the monument, which will present the finished sculpture to ‘The Beatles Story’ in Liverpool, the world's leading Beatles-themed attraction.

Julian will unveil the final sculpture in Liverpool as part of the city's two-month event to commemorate Lennon's 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his death.
