Design For New Lennon Peace Monument In Liverpool Unveiled

by CBS News

Posted on June 15, 2010 at 1:28 PM

SHANGHAI, China -- The design of a global peace monument to former Beatles member John Lennon was revealed to the public for the first time at the Liverpool pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo on Tuesday.

A hand-painted scale model of the actual monument was unveiled by its creator, American teen art prodigy Laurean Voiers, to a crowd of guests and journalists gathered at the pavilion.

The finished monument to be displayed in October this year in Lennon's hometown of Liverpool will stand almost 20 feet tall and weigh nearly 10,000 lbs.

A U.S. organisation, the Global Peace Initiative, was behind the creation of the monument and they will present the finished sculpture to "The Beatles Story" in Liverpool, the world's leading Beatles-themed attraction.

Its creator, Voiers, said her sculpture which is a design of doves flying out from a musical globe was initially set to be a peace monument in Berlin.

With music an inspiration to her artwork, and songs from the Beatles on her current playlist, it was a strange coincidence for her to finally learn that her design was to be for a monument dedicated to John Lennon.

"It was only until like a couple of months ago that I found out that it was not going to be in Berlin, that it was going to be in Liverpool, and in honour of John Lennon. It's funny because I just started like really getting into the Beatles again. You know, you get into waves of listening to old music again and this past year, my apartment was decorated on Beatles stuff so it was really kind of weird how it all came together," she said.

The final design titled "Peace and Harmony" had also incorporated a white feather on one of the doves, at the request of Lennon's son Julian, who saw it as a symbol his father's spirit and peace.

This is the second of such monuments initiated by the Global Peace Initiative as they look to place a peace monument in every of the world's seven continents. The first had been a monument presented to the President of Singapore in 2005.

Liverpool is set to benefit from the unveiling of the monument in October and Jerry Golman, the managing director of "The Beatles Story" said it was about time the city had a monument to celebrate the life of John Lennon.

"When the world goes to somewhere to think of John Lennon, there's only one place that there is actually a monument to him and that's in Central Park in New York, and it's opposite where John was shot dead. And there's nothing of that sort in the place where his spirit was created and born. We felt there needs to be a counterbalance. It's quite right the people should go to New York but equally they need a place in Liverpool where they can gather and contemplate and celebrate the life of John Lennon," he said.

John Lennon' son, Julian will take part in a ceremony to unveil the final sculpture in Liverpool as part of the city's two-month of events to commemorate Lennon's 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his death.

It had cost $350,000 to create the monument from a mixture of brushed aluminium, acrylics and a special weather-proof coating.

Voiers said she hoped her monument would inspire more people to think about love and peace for the world.

"I hope they can look at it and just see that I am just a 19-year-old normal kid but look what I've been able to do with just having a positive attitude. I've kind of been changing the way I think about the world through making this project and it's allowed me to accept people a lot more that I ever have, and just basically have love. So I really hope that people can experience that when they see my sculpture in Liverpool," she said.

John Lennon was one of the founding members of the highly successful Beatles and fans today remember him through the pacifist message of his songs such as "Imagine" and "Give Peace a Chance".

Lennon was shot and killed as by a deranged fan as he and his wife, Yoko Ono, arrived at their Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980.

John Lennon Sculpture Unveiled

The design of a John Lennon peace sculpture was revealed this week at the Shanghai Expo. Julian Lennon will unveil the full-size, 18-foot high monument in October as part of a two-month-long festival to celebrate John Lennon’s 70th birthday.

The sculpture, called “Peace and Harmony,” is by 19-year-old American Lauren Voiers, who told theLiverpool Daily Post that her inspiration came from “combining the power of art and music. I think this sums up a lot about John Lennon and what he stood for. On a personal note, my passion is art but I also love music and I wanted to reflect this in the monument. Both art and music are universal languages.”

The design incorporates doves, musical notes, a guitar and a keyboard and, at son Julian’s request, a white feather.

“One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be O.K., it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather,” Julian Lennon said.

Voiers has been asked by Julian to incorporate, within the monument’s design, a white feather which to Julian is a symbol of both his father’s spirit and of peace.

Says artist Lauren Voiers: “I’m so thrilled to have been asked to create a Global Peace Initiative monument dedicated to John Lennon. My art has always been influenced by the ideals of peace and harmony and it is a great honor to spread this message across Europe through my sculpture. SHANGHAI, June 15 (Xinhua) -- A spectacular hand-painted scale model of a peace monument to John Lennon, English singer-songwriter and one of the founding members of the Beatles, was unveiled at the Liverpool Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo on Tuesday evening.

The model is about one meter tall, and the finished monument, which cost 350,000 U.S. dollars to create, will stand 18 ft (5.4864 meters) tall, 11 ft (3.3528 meters) wide, and weigh 4.5 tonnes. The monument will be made from a mixture of brushed aluminum, acrylic and an indestructible coating to stave off the weather.

Named ' Peace and Harmony' , the monument features a pair of hands mounted on a globe surrounded by a guitar and music notes. On top of the monument a number of pigeons fly out from the hands with one of the birds holding a white feather in its beak.

John Lennon's son, Julian Lennon, will unveil the final monument in Liverpool, UK, in October as part of the city's two-month season of events to commemorate Lennon' s 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his death.

The monument will be presented at the world' s leading permanent Beatles-themed museum and visitors' attraction, the Beatles Story in Liverpool, UK, and will be located in a significant position within the city.

Created by young American artist Lauren Voiers, the monument will act as a counterbalance to the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York' s Central Park, said Jerry Goldman, managing director of the Beatles Story.

Although fans flock to the famous memorial in New York where Lennon was killed, a similar spot has never been designated in Liverpool, Lennon's hometown, to commemorate his life.

Speaking from a pre-recorded video clip, Julian Lennon said he had requested the design of the monument incorporate a White Feather, symbolizing both his father' s spirit and peace.

"One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be ok, it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather," said Julian Lennon.

Speaking at the Tuesday evening's ceremony held in the Liverpool Pavilion, Goldman said, "The Shanghai World Expo is a perfect place to give the world a glimpse of this new global peace monument to John Lennon."

"We' ve long needed a place of pilgrimage in John' s hometown for people wishing to remember one of the world' s most influential icons, complementing the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York," he added.

A PEACE monument dedicated to John Lennon will be built in Liverpool.

The 18ft monument will be unveiled by Lennon's son, Julian, in October, as part of the city's two-month season of events to commemorate the former Beatle's 70th birthday and 30th anniversary of his murder.

It was commissioned by California-based Global Peace Initiative and created by 19-year-old American artist Lauren Voiers to celebrate the musician and his message of peace.

The metal monument will be presented to the Beatles Story, which came up with the idea of a landmark in Liverpool, and sited in a prominent city centre location yet to be agreed. Beatles Story managing director Jerry Goldman said today: "New York has got the Imagine mosaic in Strawberry Fields and it attracts hordes of people.

"Global Peace Initiative wants to create a peace monument on every continent and it was well down the road on their monument for Europe, which was designed to go to the site of the Berlin Wall.

"When I asked if it could design one for us, it said the concept it was working on could not be more appropriate for Liverpool and Lennon."

The monument will incorporate a white feather within its design after a request from 47-year-old Julian, who sees it as a symbol of both his father's spirit and peace.

It is the second in a series of monuments commissioned by Global Peace Initiative. Its aim is to spread artistic symbols of peace across the globe.

The first monument was presented to the President of Singapore on behalf of the people of Asia in 2005.

Organisers hope the Liverpool monument will act as a place of pilgrimage for people wanting to remember one of the world's most influential icons, complementing the memorial in New York.

Ms Voiers said: "My art was always influenced by the ideals of peace and harmony, and it is a great honour to spread this message across Europe through my sculpture.

"The fact it will be located in Liverpool, the home town of such a music legend, is phenomenal."

Ben Valenty begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, director of Global Peace Initiative, added: "We were searching for an appropriate location for the second Global Peace monument for some time.

"The creativity and history surrounding Liverpool make it an ideal destination for Europe's art piece."

Liverpool to build John Lennon peace monument

Friday 14th May, 2010

An 18-foot monument designed by a young American woman and dedicated to John Lennon will be unveiled in Liverpool later this year.

The work has been commissioned by the Global Peace Initiative (GPI) and could become a hit with tourists staying in Liverpool hotels, since it has the backing of The Beatles Story, which will be presented with the item in October.

Jerry Goldman, managing director of The Beatles Story, highlighted the success of the Imagine mosaic in New York and stated that the GPI is aiming to create a peace monument in every city of the world.

He said: "When I asked if it could design one for us, it said the concept it was working on could not be more appropriate for Liverpool and John Lennon."

The design for the GPI work comes from 19-year-old Lauren Voiers and aims to represent the message of peace the musician encouraged.

Lennon was killed on December 8th 1980 outside the apartment block in New York that he had been sharing with Yoko Ono.

Peace Monument honoring John Lennon to be gifted to the Beatles Story and UK City of Liverpool

American art sensation, 19 year-old Lauren Voiers is creating a monument to world icon John Lennon and his message of peace.

Commissioned by California-based organisation Global Peace Initiative, the monument will be presented to the world's leading permanent Beatles-themed visitor attraction, the Beatles Story in Liverpool, UK, and will be sited in a significant position within the city.

John's son Julian Lennon will unveil the monument to the world at a high profile ceremony in October 2010, the month his father would have turned 70. US artist Lauren Voiers has been asked by Julian to incorporate, within the monument's design, a white feather - which to Julian is a symbol of both his father's spirit and of peace.

This is the second in a series of monuments commissioned by Global Peace Initiative. Their aim is to place a peace monument in each of the world's seven continents and spread artistic symbols of peace across the globe. The first monument was presented to the President of Singapore on behalf of the people of Asia in 2005.

Liverpool, UK has been chosen as the European location for this second monument, dedicated to the spirit of one of the city's most famous sons. The monument will act as a place of pilgrimage for people wishing to remember one of the world's most influential icons, complementing the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York.

Lauren's monument, which she entitled ‘Peace & Harmony', will be unveiled in Liverpool, UK during the city's John Lennon Tribute Season which will take place from 9 October -
9 December 2010. This extensive season of cultural events will celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday and marks the 30th anniversary of his untimely death. The unveiling of the monument will generate enormous interest from around the world with European dignitaries and celebrities being invited to the ceremony.

Artist Lauren Voiers said, "I'm excited to have been asked to create a Global Peace Initiative monument dedicated to John Lennon. Much of my artwork is greatly influenced by the ideals of peace and harmony among all people of the world and I believe music is the soul of peace. It's truly an honour to spread a message of peace across Europe through my sculpture. The fact it will be located in Liverpool, the home town of such a music legend, is a great thrill for me personally."

Jerry Goldman, Managing Director of the Beatles Story said, "The UK has long needed a monument to John Lennon which acts as a counter balance to the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York's Central Park. We're incredibly excited about Global Peace Initiative's gift to the city. It is the perfect opportunity for us to provide the world with a permanent reminder of John Lennon in the city where his spirit was created."

Ben Valenty begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, Director of Global Peace Initiative said, "We have been searching for an appropriate location for the second Global Peace monument for sometime. The creativity and history that surrounds Liverpool make it an ideal destination for Europe's art piece. Lauren's work is exceptional and we're very excited that this commission is underway."

Patricia Yates, Director of Strategy and Communications, VisitBritain said, "We expect this monument to attract hundreds of thousands of Lennon fans from all around the world to visit Liverpool - one of the UK's most exciting destinations."

Mike Storey, Lord Mayor of Liverpool said, "We are very proud that Global Peace Initiative have chosen to site the European monument in our City and to celebrate the desire for Peace of one of our most famous sons. Liverpool should rightly be the focal point for Lennon fans throughout the world."

John Lennon’s Global Message Lives On

I just learned that John Lennon would have been coming up on his 70th birthday this October! The music of the Beatles has certainly thrived for many decades. So has John Lennon’s message of peace.

The California-based organization Global Peace Initiative, commissioned a monument that will be presented to the world’s leading permanent Beatles-themed visitor attraction, the Beatles Story in Liverpool, UK.

19-year old art prodigy Lauren Voiers, was tapped for the task. (Do you remember what you were doing when you were 19? I was preparing to cheer on the sidelines during the Sugar Bowl, followed by a national team dance competition. Very Cheerios from hit tv show, “Glee.” It’s not quite in the slacker department, but it wasn’t earth shattering work either.)

So, how did one so young get invited to be part of such a project?

“The Global Peace Initiative became aware of me through ImaginArt and after seeing my art and learning about [my] commitment to peace, the GPI invited me to create the second monument.”

A study piece for Voiers' sculpture. Rendering will be released in June.

Having been interested in visiting (and not yet done so) the United Kingdom for a while now, combined with my interest in music history… I had a ton of questions for Jerry Goldman, the

Managing Director of the Beatles Story museum.

JM: What does the Peace Monument mean for Beatles Story and Liverpool?

JG: It provides Lennon fans from all over the world with an alternative focal point to Central Park New York. Strawberry Fields is tinged with sadness as it is opposite the spot where Lennon met his untimely death. This will be a celebratory monument in the City where Lennon’s peace loving spirit was created.

JM: Did Beatle Mania ever really go away?

JG: In one form it did – we do not see crowds of girls screaming any more. However the Beatles and their music are now more popular than ever with every generation. Most days the steps of the Beatles Story are crowded with school groups singing their hearts out to their favorite Beatles songs as they wait to enter the exhibition.

JM: Aside from this peace memorial, what are some of the highlights for those visiting the Beatles Story for a first time pilgrimage?

JG: Firstly the audio living history audio tour narrated by John Lennon’s sister Julia. Paul McCartney, Brian Epstein, George Martin and many many others, talk you through the story of the Fab4. The exhibition takes you through the Casbah Club, the streets of Hamburg, Mathew Street and the original Cavern club as if you were walking back in time to the world of the 1960′s. On the way you see many famous pieces of memorabilia, including George Harrison’s first guitar and John Lennon’s iconic spectacles. For children, there is an amazing interactive Discovery Zone and children and adults alike, are amazed by our new 4-D theatre experience taking you into the music of the Beatles. Finally a special exhibition – White Feather Spirit of Lennon – created by Julian and Cynthia Lennon together with the Beatles Story – telling the emotional story of their life with John.

John’s son, Julian Lennon, will unveil the monument to the world at a high profile ceremony in October 2010.
