Liverpool to build John Lennon peace monument

Friday 14th May, 2010

An 18-foot monument designed by a young American woman and dedicated to John Lennon will be unveiled in Liverpool later this year.

The work has been commissioned by the Global Peace Initiative (GPI) and could become a hit with tourists staying in Liverpool hotels, since it has the backing of The Beatles Story, which will be presented with the item in October.

Jerry Goldman, managing director of The Beatles Story, highlighted the success of the Imagine mosaic in New York and stated that the GPI is aiming to create a peace monument in every city of the world.

He said: "When I asked if it could design one for us, it said the concept it was working on could not be more appropriate for Liverpool and John Lennon."

The design for the GPI work comes from 19-year-old Lauren Voiers and aims to represent the message of peace the musician encouraged.

Lennon was killed on December 8th 1980 outside the apartment block in New York that he had been sharing with Yoko Ono.
